I love to travel and the pandemic put an immediate stop to that. A little over a year into the pandemic, I finally decided to take venture out of the DMV (DC, Maryland, (Northern) Virginia) area to Columbia, South Carolina for a mini gateway.
I stayed down there for a week (working remote) and checking out the sites. Stayed in an Airbnb, that although, the location was great … would not recommend . That may be another blog 😖! Didn’t make it to Charleston, but I plan on returning.
Somethings to check out in Columbia, SC:
1. West Columbia River Walk Park and Amphitheater
Great for walking the trail along the river and enjoying the scenery. There is grassy area for a picnic, as well.

2. A’ja Wilson statue at University of South Carolina.
My sorors of AKA or other D9 organizations may appreciate this. There are not many black woman athletes with statues on a college campus…and campuses that at one time, their grandmother couldn’t step foot on.

3. The HBCUs.
South Carolina as a whole has 7 open and operating HBCUs; two of them are located in Columbia, SC – Benedict College and Allen University. They are literally across the street from one another.

4. Publico Kitchen and Tap
Enjoyed their Taco Monday special for Happy Hour and their patio in the back is its own vibe!

5. Main Stage … “That’s my Jam” night was its version of R&B Karaoke night with a southern twist.

6. Black Rooster!
The outdoor rooftop has a beautiful view (picture don’t do it justice) and the food was good too! French theme restaurant and waitstaff were very attentive.

7. KiKi’s Chicken and Waffle

The food was really good – minus my grits. I recommend it – just be prepared to wait. Black-owned and operated – Said to be a favorite of President Joe Biden and Hilary Clinton.
8. Hendrix
Their rooftop patio gets fairly busy on Friday nights, but the atmosphere is nice. Martinis were made just right- food portions were small but tasty.
